Birds and Bark is a Nanaimo-based birding website that publishes informative, entertaining birding articles and high-quality bird photography.

What we’re interested in

‌• Articles on species of birds (barred owls, belted kingfishers, snow buntings, etc.)
‌• Articles on species of birds found at specific locations (great blue herons at Buttertubs Marsh, northern harriers at Nanaimo River Estuary, etc.)
‌• Articles on birding locations (Buttertubs Marsh, Nanaimo River Estuary, Morrell Nature Sanctuary, etc.)
‌• Photo essays on species of birds or birding locations
‌• Articles on the craft of bird photography

General Guidelines

Articles should be:

• based in the Regional District of Nanaimo (Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, or Lanzville)
‌• accompanied with high-quality photos and captions (no cell phone photos, grainy or blurry photos, etc.)
‌• written in accessible language for a non-specialist audience
‌• between 300-1500 words

Lastly, and most importantly, articles should tell a story and inform. An article about the first time you saw a short-eared owl is great (tell a story), but it would be even better if you integrated facts about the species (inform).

Submission Requirements

Each submission should include:
